El Empaque and Conversión:
Joining together to better serve the packaging value chain in Latin America
Bogota, Colombia. September 25, 2012.
- These two emblematic publications of the packaging and converting sectors in the Latin American region are taking a strategic step, consistent with current transformations in the industry.
- The fundamental mission of this new integrated publication will be to provide intelligence on branding, technology and markets for converting and packaging professionals in Latin America.
- Its combined circulation will imply greater growth and penetration, with each run of nearly 25,000 copies impacting top executives in 20 Latin American countries.
Latin America’s two most outstanding publications for information technology and markets aimed at professionals in the fields of packaging and converting —El Empaque y Conversión— will become one single integrated communication medium starting with their first printed edition of September/October 2012.
In tune with the transformations currently under way in the world of packaging, the two publications bring with them two decades of knowledge and expertise to strategically serve, as one single integrated communications medium, the diverse members of the productive packaging chain in Latin America. This month, Conversión celebrated 20 years of informing converters in the region. El Empaque has been serving brand-owners throughout Latin America for 13 years.
“This bold initiative by B2B is a win-win solution for our readers. Developing packaging solutions nowadays requires multidisciplinary work and demands interaction with diverse experts and professionals throughout the chain. That is why the integration of these two communities, and the enlargement of the editorial spectrum through this new combined publication, makes a lot of sense and promotes the exchange of knowledge and collaboration aimed at fostering growth and development of the Latin American packaging industry”, according to Lilián Robayo Páez, current editor of the two journals.
The combined circulation of this new publication will imply greater scope and penetration, with each run of nearly 25,000 copies impacting top executives in 20 Latin American countries. Its circulation is audited by the international firm BPA Worldwide Business.
Distribution will continue to respond to a pan-regional Latin American coverage, with particular geographical emphasis on the markets of Mexico (40%), Colombia (22%), Argentina (12%) and Chile (8%).
Additionally, the electronic versions will also be made available to 4,728 industry professionals, who will receive the digital magazine, E-newsletters and advertising campaigns by e-mail.
“Today more than ever, developing packaging requires synergies and teamwork among brand-owners, converters and machinery and materials suppliers for the manufacture of packaging. That is why these groups need to share information on trends and technologies if they are to provide successful solutions”, says Terry Beirne, Publisherof Conversión and El Empaque for more than a decade. “There is thus a need for an efficient communications medium and an ideal space to hold and enrich that dialogue”, he adds.
Beirne goes on to say that “converting and package printing represent an extremely important sector of the wider packaging world. Emerging trends and technologies in this field are very relevant aspects that professionals at consumer packaged goods companies must stay abreast of, including aspects such as flexography, digital printing, offset, serigraphy, lamination, extrusion, die-cutting and coating, among many others.”
That is why the B2B division of Carvajal Información S.A.S. has today taken on the challenge of integrating the two publications, while reaffirming its commitment to continue providing —through the printed publication and through digital channels— first-rate editorial content to enable its readers and users to make much better informed decisions, to respond to their customers with more and better arguments and to be much more productive and competitive.
The vertical Internet portals www.conversion.com and www.elempaque.com will be integrated starting on January 1, 2013. Meanwhile, the two Internet websites will continue to operate independently, along with all of their corresponding E-newsletters. The distribution of the digital magazines will include the entire subscriber base on-line of both publications.

Miami, USA. January 14, 2011. B2Bportales, specialized media division of Publicar SA, part of 107-year Grupo Carvajal, initiated a plan to restructure its publications’ portfolio and announced the integration or sale of some of its assets.
Aimed at providing better services to specific B2B communities in Latin America, the plan includes the strengthening of the print and online publications, seminars and marketing services catering to the healthcare, plastics, metalworking, packaging and manufacturing sectors, plus the integration or sale of their existing publications in television, graphic arts, oil & gas and analytical laboratory industries.
Founded in 1985 under the name "Edimedios" to develop technical and business publications throughout Latin America, B2Bportales has experienced a lot of changes in its product portfolio, to meet the demands of the evolving publishing industry. After the launch and acquisition of leading titles in Latin America in the last 25 years, such as TECNOLOGIA DEL PLASTICO, EL HOSPITAL, CONVERSION, METALMECANICA, EL EMPAQUE and REPORTERO INDUSTRIAL, which will remain in its portfolio, B2Bportales joined the specialized media division of Publicar S.A, which owns the Colombian business-to-business directories: Catálogo de la Salud, Catálogo del Empaque and Catálogo de Logística. Finally, after the publication of its last Jan/Feb 2011 issue, ARTES GRAFICAS magazine, its website and academic events will migrate to CONVERSION, a B2Bportales publication launched in 1992 to cater to the package printing and converting industry.
Subscribers and users of the information solutions provided by B2Bportales, as well as the worldwide suppliers who cater to these industrial communities, will be beneficiated by the announced restructuration. B2Bportales’ new focus on a smaller number of publications and sectors, while realigning the staff of the divested assets, seeks to strengthen the value of the remaining portfolio by assigning added resources to these publications, deepening our knowledge and coverage of the served communities, and by launching new solutions and improving the current media and marketing services offered to our advertisers.

Carvajal's B2Bportales partners with Brazil's Lund Publishing
The alliance seeks to accelerate the group's growth in the Latin
American B2B market
São Paulo (August 15, 2007).
The Carvajal Organization, a Latin American multinational that
operates in 18 countries, has just completed negotiations to acquire
a majority shareholding in the Grupo Lund de Editoras Asociadas
(Lund Publishing Group) of Brazil. The association will take place
through the B2Bportales Company, which is part of the Grupo Editorial
Norma, a member of the Carvajal Organization.
The new association consolidates Carvajal's growth within the
business publications market in Brazil and Latin America. The
publishers of the Grupo Lund, with 47 years of experience in the
Brazilian market, have 30% of the Business to Business (B2B) magazine
and publications market in the industrial area and in retail sales,
with three of the sector's most important publications: Supermercado
Moderno (Modern Supermarket) magazine aimed at the retail
market, and in a joint venture with Thomas International Publishing
Co., NEI (Noticiário de Equipamentos Industriais)
magazine and the annual Guia-NEI, aimed at the industrial
market. These three publications reach 220,000 qualified readers
and serve 1,200 advertisers, including Internet and CD-ROM versions.
NEI was launched in 1973 to reach the growing Brazilian industrial
segment, through a joint venture between Grupo Lund and Thomas
International Publishing Co. Thomas, founded in 1898, is one of
the world's most respected B2B publishers, with a presence in
North America, Latin America, Europe and Asia.
The firm is internationally known for its Thomas Industrial
Network products (successor to Thomas Register of American
Manufacturers), for the Thomas Global Register,
and for IEN (Industrial Equipment News) magazine in its
US and international versions.
"This union of strengths between B2Bportales, the Grupo Lund and
Thomas International Publishing Co. opens a wide range of opportunities
for business expansion in Brazil and in the rest of Latin America.
It is a perfect marriage between strong, traditional and reliable
publishers in the markets where they operate. Through this association,
the resulting organization will manage a larger number of B2B
publications, which will enable us to expand even more the possibilities
for communication and generation of business contacts in the sectors
that we serve", explained David Ashe, president of B2Bportales.
In addition to the publications in this area that B2Bportales
already manages (Metalmecánica, Artes Gráficas, Conversión,
El Empaque, Tecnología del Plástico, El Hospital, Laboratorio
y Análisis, TV y Video, Petróleo Internacional, World Industrial
Reporter and Reportero Industrial), Carvajal will be operating
in the Latin American market with a total of 14 publications dealing
with diverse sectors of industry and trade.
"For the Grupo Lund, a big factor in deciding to create this alliance
was the affinity of values and vision in running the business.
The two organizations have a proud tradition of ethics and social
responsibility while seeking the highest possible quality for
their products and services", according to Cody Lund, president
of Grupo Lund, now associated with Carvajal. “We see this
union as a natural evolution of our 35-year business presence
in Latin America, one that provides outstanding opportunities
for growth throughout the region,” added John Lindsey, President
of Thomas International Publishing Co. "The B2B market grows more
and more promising as the provision of services gains ground in
the world economy, requiring an ever greater number of associations
between companies from different areas. Carvajal in this market
acts to provide quality information to foster the success of B2B
relationships and the growth of organizations. That is why our
alliances place priority on recognized and solid companies like
the Grupo Lund, which has been in the Brazilian market since 1960",
